I’m a professor of creative writing at Lesley University where I teach nonfiction in their low-res MFA program. I am also the director of the MFA program and coordinator of its interdisciplinary studies component—which is really a chance to help people follow their obsessions.
I’ve taught for over 20 years, including an ESL stint in Tokyo from 1996-2000. I also have an MA in Psychoanalytic Counseling and have worked with clients individually and in groups, including writers and artists in Conscious Creating groups.
I believe that writers most need to figure out what story they are telling. (“but what’s it about?” ), I use psychoanalytic techniques as a vehicle to offer writers a new perspective on their work. Combining deep listening and spontaneous conversation, I capture keywords and themes and play them back to the writer, prompting them to hear themselves and get to the heart of their writing.
